Any person born on or after 1st of january 1980, and is going to operate a boat longer than 8 meters in length or if the vessel has an engine more powerful than 25hp, have to take the Norwegian boating exam (båtførerprøven).
Yes, you can still get a Norwegian boating license.
In order to get the license you have to register on Båtførerregisteret.no and book yourself a test appointment to take the exam.

Our online course in English is priced at 990 NOK, study materials and shipping included.
In addition there is an exam/testing fee that you have to pay to Båtførerregisteret (The Norwegian boat operators registry).
As of 2023, the fee is 837 NOK.

The boating license lets you operate any leisure/recreational boat under 15 meters (49,21 feet) in length in Norwegian waters.
From the 1st of june 2023 a new law is implemented that makes it mandatory for any boat operator to take an additional «fast-boat license» in order to operate boats (including jet-skis) with a speed capacity of 50 knots or more.
As long as you have uploaded an approved photo of yourself to your profile on Båtførerregisteret, you’ll receive your license in about 2-3 weeks.
If you are under 16 years old, you will receive your license on, or close to, your 16th birthday.
You follow the status of your license on your profile on Båtførerregisret.no.

If you have failed a previous attempt, you must wait 14 days before you can take another test.
Example: You took the test on Saturday the 1st of july you’ll have to wait to Saturday the 14th of july or later to do another attempt.
Please be advised that Båtførerregisteret requires a retry/repetition fee (as of 2023: NOK 441) for a new test. You must pay this on your profile at båtføreregisteret.no before a new test can be taken.
In order to pass the boating test you need a minimum of 80% correct score overall in addition to over 80% in the subject «Particularly important topics».
In order to pass both of these requirements need to be met.
